1. Why have a Psychological Assessment?
A Psychological Assessment will answer a number of questions such as:-
a). What are the subject's strengths and weaknesses?
b). What is the subject's performance in reading, spelling and number like relative to his/her peers?
c). Is the subject underachieving in reading, spelling or number when compared with level of intelligence?
d). Is there a reason for any under achievement?
e) e). What can be done at home, in school, college or work about any problems that have been highlighted?

2. What happens during a Psychological Assessment?
During the assessment the subject will be given a number of tasks to do which may include problem solving, drawing, memory tests, tests of speed of information processing and language processing. Tests of reading, spelling and possibly numbers will also be given which will allow comparisons to be made between a) their performance and that of others of the same age, and b) their performance and that expected from their level of intelligence.

3. How long does it take?
The assessment usually takes from 1 hour 35 minutes for young children, to about 2 hours for adults. After the assessment, time is available to discuss the results with the Psychologist. This discussion usually takes about 30 minutes.

4. What happens after the Assessment?
After the assessment a report is written which:-
a). Highlights areas of strength and weakness, for example verbal and nonverbal reasoning or short-term memory.
b). Reports any areas of strength and weakness in basic literacy and/or numeracy skills.
c). Reports any under achievement.
d). Gives a 'diagnosis' if appropriate.
e). Makes recommendations for remediation or for the work place.
A full print out of all the results obtained during assessment is also given in an Appendix at the end of the report.
